Top Flames Fights of 2008-09
With the Calgary Flames 2008-09 season now firmly in the rear view mirror Calgary Sports takes a look back at the year that was in fights and selects the six best scraps involving the Calgary Flames this past season. One Flame noticeably absent from the list is Dion Phaneuf who seems no longer to be a factor in intimidating the Flames opponents.
#6 – Nathan McIver (ANA) vs Eric Nystrom Dec 23, 2008

Decent fight, Nystrom makes his first of three appearances on the list. Both fighters throw lots of shots with Nystrom landing one solid bomb to the kisser early on. Nystrom with the takedown at the end.
#5 – Willie Mitchell (Van) vs Jarome Iginla – Oct 11, 2008

Mitchell gets an early advantage as he manages to get Iginla’s jersey over his head and proceeds to throw some bombs, mostly glancing blows until Iginla get’s his head free and pops Mitchell with one punch on the kisser that buckles Mitchell just long enough for the linesmen to break up the festivities.
#4 – Warren Peters vs Ben Ondrus (Tor) Mar 14, 2009

A good toe to toe bout in which Peters feeds Ondrus a number of straight right hands taking a lopsided victory against a game opponent.
#3 – Dan Hinote (STL) vs Eric Nystrom Jan 13, 2009

Hinote and Nystrom drop the gloves on the faceoff and both go back and forth with the younger Eric Nystrom hanging tough with the older Hinote in a great middleweight bout.
#2 – Wayne Simmonds (LAK) vs Warren Peters Apr 6, 2009

Simmonds and Peters remove their helmets before the tilt and then square off. Peters doesn’t get off to a good start as he has trouble with his balance in the beginning.
Both fighters are throwing haymakers with nothing much landing before Peters gets in some shots that takes simmonds off balance. Simmonds battles back however and lands some solid blows of his own taking Peters to the ice.

I don’t know what happened here as Murray and Nystrom are ready to fight then decide they don’t like the song playing…wait for a new tune and begin their dance….good fight and if anything I can say is Nystrom is a tough cookie, routinely he takes solid shots to the face in fights and yet he always manages to come out swinging at the end of the fights. Wonderful trait.
