Brett Sonne - 2008-09 WHL Player of the Year
For the second straight season, the third time in the past four and fifth time overall a Calgary Hitmen player has been awarded the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as the Western Hockey League’s Player of the Year.
Brett Sonne won the award after registering 100 points in 62 games on the season, including scoring 48 goals and was a +39 overall.
Sonne also picked up 3 points while helping Canada’s under-20 Junior team to a gold medal at the 2009 World Junior Hockey
Championships in Ottawa.
“Coming in, I wanted to prove I could be a top forward in this league and also be here for my team,” Sonne said. Mission accomplished.
Sonne joins Karl Alzner (08-09), Justin Pogge (05-06) and Brad Moran (99-00) as the only Calgary Hitmen to win the award.
The Hitmen have won the award four times in their fifteen year history.
In related news Hitmen general manager Kelly Kisio has won the Lloyd Saunders Memorial Trophy as Executive of the Year for the second time. His first award came for the 2003-04 season.
Those are nice honours but they’ll both be the first to tell you that there is work still left to be done. Complacency kills dreams.
